Ever observed how a pigeon eats?
It is actually really interesting to stare at pigeons while they eat, provided that you have nothing better to do that is.
The bread crumbs or the bits of food that dropped from sandwiches are usually too big for the pigeons to swallow whole.
The pigeon hops up to the crumb, picks it up, bite a bit off while flicking away the rest.
Then it hops to where the crumbs landed, and repeats the process until it finishes the whole piece.
Imagine that it just holds on to one piece, and scared that it will lose the food once it lets go, then the process won't get anywhere.
Simple.
